In a heartwarming celebration filled with joy, reflection, and hope, the widows of Old Wharf in Wellington gathered to mark one year of resilience and transformation through the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) program. This powerful initiative, supported by the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation, has played a critical role in restoring dignity, stability, and purpose to the lives of these women.

Launched in 2024 in the Old Wharf community, the VSLA was introduced to address the longstanding economic and social challenges faced by widowed women in the area. Many had struggled with financial insecurity, social exclusion, and limited access to income-generating opportunities. Through the program, they were organized into a savings group that promotes financial literacy, collective savings, access to microloans, and mutual support.
One year later, the impact is both visible and deeply felt. The celebration saw the women share stories of how the program has enabled them to start petty trading, invest in their small businesses, pay school fees, manage emergencies, and support one another through both hardships and successes. More than a financial tool, the VSLA has become a symbol of sisterhood, strength, and self-reliance.

With drums beating and voices raised in song, the women expressed their gratitude to the foundation for believing in them and standing by their side in this journey of growth and empowerment. “This savings group has changed my life,” said one member. “I used to depend on others, but now I can support myself and even help others. We are no longer seen as helpless we are businesswomen and leaders in our community.”
Isatu M. Sesay, Field Officer of the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation, who was present at the anniversary celebration, shared warm words of encouragement and appreciation. “This celebration is a reflection of what happens when communities are given the right tools and trusted to lead their own transformation,” she said. “We are proud of the women of Old Wharf and committed to helping replicate this success in other communities.”
As the sun set over Old Wharf, the widows sang happily not just for what they had achieved in the past year, but for the brighter future they are now building together with confidence and pride. Their unity, laughter, and hope filled the air, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed the moment.
They will start again in two weeks’ time and they are excited for another journey.
