Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation Commemorates International Widows Day 2026

The Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation (JNJF) commemorated International Widows Day 2026 on 23rd June 2026 at Africell Corner, 25 Bathurst Street, Freetown, under the theme, “Dignity and Economic Power for Widows – An African Perspective.” The event brought together widows from various communities supported by the Foundation to celebrate their resilience, promote dignity, and encourage economic empowerment.

As part of the commemoration, the Foundation organized a series of appreciation activities for selected widows. Prior to the event, four chairladies from different communities were hosted at the New Brookfields Hotel for a two-night stay, providing them with an opportunity for rest and relaxation. Following the event, another group of four widows received wellness treatments, including massages, facials, manicures, and pedicures, at Kisu’s Luxury Spa in Aberdeen before sharing a meal together later at Togo restaurant. Additionally, three widows were hosted at Mango Peak, where they were provided with outfits for the outing and treated to lunch.

The official programme featured prayers, a drama presentation, and keynote addresses from distinguished guests. Dr. Ambassador Kumba Foday delivered the keynote address, while Dr. Adonis Abboud, a member of the Foundation’s Board, also addressed participants. Miss Catherine, Head of the Chairladies, shared her personal testimony on how the Foundation has positively impacted her life. The programme was chaired by Mr. Daniel, the Foundation’s Programme Coordinator.

Throughout the event, widows participated in the activities dressed in matching attire, reflecting unity and solidarity. The celebration provided an opportunity for participants to interact, share experiences, and reaffirm their value within their families and communities.

The event reinforced the Foundation’s commitment to supporting widows through initiatives that promote dignity, confidence, and economic empowerment. It also served as a reminder of the importance of creating supportive spaces where widows are recognised, celebrated, and encouraged to rebuild their lives with hope and purpose.
