In communities across Sierra Leone, countless widows face the heavy burden of raising families with little to no support. Suba Vandi, from Hook Street, is one of many women whose lives have been positively impacted through the monthly beneficiary support provided by the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation (JNJF) in partnership with Social Income.
Over 20 years ago, Suba lost her husband. Since then, she has been the sole caregiver to her family, now looking after seven grandchildren. With no external help from extended family, she was left to navigate the difficult journey of care giving and survival alone.
For years, Suba faced daily struggles putting food on the table, paying for medicine, and making sure her grandchildren were clothed and cared for. Like many widows in undeserved communities, she relied on sheer resilience and hope. But through the regular support she now receives from JNJF and Social Income, her life has taken a new and hopeful direction.

The monthly beneficiary aid empowers Suba to run a small petty trading business, allowing her to earn a modest income that covers household needs and health emergencies. What was once a story of survival is now one of stability, dignity, and renewal.
“This support has changed everything for me,” Suba shared. “I use it to care for my grandchildren, and it has helped me grow my small business. I’m truly grateful.”
Suba is just one of many widows benefiting from this initiative. Through our growing network of community-based support groups, we have seen firsthand how this consistent, reliable income is transforming lives helping women reclaim control, support their families, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
At JNJF, we are committed to expanding this impact. With the continued support of partners like Social Income, we will keep reaching widows in need across Sierra Leone ensuring they are not forgotten and that their stories, like Suba’s, inspire others to believe in what’s possible when we come together to care.
