Empowering widows with financial skills is a game-changer in vulnerable communities, allowing them to regain their independence and rebuild their lives. The Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation is leading this mission, focusing on widows in some of Sierra Leone's most underserved areas.
Through programs like the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA), the Foundation equips widows with business skills, microloans, and financial literacy training. These tools help them create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families, lifting them out of poverty.
Many widows, like Maria Mbayoh from Crab Town, faced severe financial struggles after losing their spouses. "Before joining VSLA, I had nothing to sustain my family. But with the Foundation's support, I started a soap-making business, and now I can provide for my children," Maria shared.
The VSLA program fosters a culture of saving and financial independence, allowing women to pool resources and access critical financial services. According to Community Development Officer Hawa Bintu Dauda, "The goal is to give these women the financial knowledge they never had before so they can grow their businesses and lift themselves out of poverty."
Beyond financial support, the Foundation is restoring dignity and confidence to these women. "Empowering them isn’t just about money; it’s about helping them stand tall in the face of adversity," says Program Coordinator Mrs. Rugiatu Tarawalie.
The JNJ Foundation’s focus on financial empowerment is creating lasting change. Widows, once trapped in dependency, are now thriving entrepreneurs contributing to their communities and building a brighter future for their families. #JNJF #EmpowerWidows2024 #WeRiseByLiftingOthers #TransformativeJourney #EmpoweredWidow #WidowsResilience #CommunityEmpowerment #Support #Widows #Everyone
