Mariama Mansaray, a resident of Hooke Street, is one of the many women whose life has been transformed by the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation (JNJF). Today, she works as an office assistant at the Foundation, a role that brings her a sense of purpose and a chance to earn a living with dignity.
Like many widows in Sierra Leone, Mariama faced serious challenges after the loss of her husband. Without consistent support, making ends meet became difficult. But things started to change when she joined the Foundation’s women’s empowerment programs.
Through the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA), Mariama began saving small amounts each week, learning from other women, and rebuilding her confidence. As part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to empowering women, she was offered the opportunity to support the office with cleaning and day-to-day assistance, a simple but meaningful step that has opened new doors for her.

It’s an opportunity Mariama doesn’t take for granted. She’s grateful to be working, earning something for herself, and contributing in a space she once never imagined being part of. From being a widow in the community to now assisting at the Foundation’s office, her journey is a reflection of growth, dignity, and hope.
“I’m really thankful for this chance,” Mariama shares. “It has made a big difference in my life.”
Her story is a reminder of how the Foundation is not only helping women recover but also helping them rise. Mariama is one of many who have transitioned from the community into jobs, whether at the office or in hotels and other workplaces. By building their skills and believing in their potential, the Foundation is helping women take back control of their lives.
From struggle to strength, and from the community to meaningful work Mariama’s story is proof that with the right support, widows can thrive.
