Empowerment Begins, Elizabeth Street Widows Launch New VSLA Savings Cycle

On 11th February 2026, a significant milestone was recorded at Elizabeth Street as widows and vulnerable women officially launched a new Village Savings and Loan Association, VSLA, cycle through the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation.
The launch marked the beginning of a fresh chapter of savings, empowerment, and sisterhood for the women, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to restoring dignity and strengthening livelihoods across supported communities.
The event commenced with an opening prayer delivered by a Pastor from the community, setting a tone of gratitude and unity.

Delivering the welcome remarks and purpose of the gathering, Communications Officer, Abdul Salam Tejan- Cole, highlighted the importance of VSLA as a tool for financial independence, community bonding, and long term sustainability for widows and vulnerable women.
Statements were delivered on behalf of key stakeholders, including the Community Development Officer (CDO) Abass Gbouma representing the Foundation, Chairlady Marion speaking on behalf of all Chairladies, and the Community Chief, who commended the Foundation for its continued investment in community empowerment.
Testimonies formed a powerful part of the program. Chairlady Haja of Mountain Cut shared insights from ongoing VSLA successes within her community, emphasizing how savings groups have transformed businesses, households, and children’s welfare. The (CDO)- Abass Gbouma further reiterated the broader impact of VSLA across multiple communities.

A symbolic highlight followed as all Chairladies joined together for the official launching of the Elizabeth Street VSLA cycle, signifying unity, mentorship, and collective growth.
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by VSLA Leader, Fatmata, who expressed deep appreciation to the Foundation, community leaders, and fellow women for their support and commitment to the initiative.
The event concluded with a closing prayer by Madam Catherine, followed by a group photo session and refreshments.
The Elizabeth Street launch stands as yet another testament to the Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation’s mission, empowering widows, strengthening communities, and building sustainable pathways to economic independence.
